I had the privilege of knowing Gus. All of our dogs are special, but Gus was one of a kind. He truly was a gentle giant. He always had a smile on his face and was so trusting of anyone, even though he couldn’t see. He loved his baths and really enjoyed lying in the sun. We were lucky to have had Gus at OPP and Gus was lucky to have found his forever home with such wonderful parents. He could not have had a better life after he left us.

Run and romp across the bridge sweet, sweet boy. Enjoy finally seeing all the beauty around you. It’s not half as beautiful as you were.

I remember Gus from the original facility! He was such a sweetheart, and he was always so happy even though he couldn’t see. I was thrilled when he was adopted and have thought of him frequently over the years, knowing he had a wonderful home in Colorado! Thanks, Mary Ellen and Michael, for giving Gus the home he deserved! You’re the best!

    Dear Mary Ellen and Michael,

I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved dog Gus. Pictures speak a thousand words, and all of the pictures you’ve shared with OPP over the years illustrate how much you love Gus and how happy he was to have joined an amazing family.

I did not have the pleasure of meeting the infamous Gus, but he is a legacy among OPP volunteers. Whenever one of the volunteers that DID met him speaks about him, their eyes light up and they still sound like they miss him. It seems to me that Gus was one of those dogs that reaches the deepest part of a person’s heart with his love.

It was always incredibly heart-warming to us whenever you sent pictures of Gus in his wonderful, loving home. I particularly loved the card that Gus sent to OPP before you moved out west (Colorado?). I’m sure he ending up loving “that fluffy white stuff” he was so excited to play in.

Thank you for being so good to Gus and please know that you are in our thoughts during this difficult time.

    Sincerely, Kelly Plautz

I did not know Gus, but I have heard about him. My heart goes out to you because I know how hard it is to lose a very loved puppy. Thank you for giving him a wonderful home.

  5. Heather B Says:

I never new Gus, but what I do know is that OPP chooses the best dogs and does their very best to better dogs who would other wise be destroyed.

Thank you OPP for taking this boy in and thank you to his family that gave Gus the chance he deserved.

Its people like Mary Ellen and Michael that make it possible for OPP to take in dogs like Gus, because its proven that there are BIG hearts out there who want to give a sweet deserving blind boy a good forever home!

I did not have the pleasure of meeting Gus but I can see through his pictures what a fantastic boy he was. The saying if a picture could say a thousand words comes to mind when I look at the pictures posted here. They really tell a story of a dog looking for a family and of a family looking for him and then finding each other. And boy does he smile! What an amazing family you guys make! He will live on forever in our hearts and memories.

I, fortunately, did have the privilege of knowing Gus! He was such a sweet boy! Mary Ellen and Michael, I am so sorry for your loss. My heart was so heavy when I learned the news I have a funny Gus story that hopefully will bring a smile to your faces. One night I was doing the evening feeding by myself. Gus was in what is now called Ralph’s room since he was the greeter. I went into one of the other rooms to feed. When I came back into Ralph’s room, the cushion to the wicker love seat was on the floor and its stuffing was everywhere (but in the cushion)! There was Gus looking all sweet and innocent. The only thing that I could figure was that one of our new pups was in heat and it was a little too frustrating for Gus! All I did was laugh and pick up the mess. I’ll never forget that night nor the sweet gentle giant, Gus! I want for all of the OPP dogs to have a home as wonderful as yours. Thank you for making Gus a part of yours.
